Nordic Naturals Review
Nordic Naturals was founded in 1995 by Norwegian-born Joar Opheim, who grew up in Arctic Norway. After moving to California, he found that the high-quality fish oil he was familiar with was difficult to find in the United States, which led him to establish the company. Today, Nordic Naturals is headquartered in Watsonville, California.
The brand’s fish oils are made from fresh, wild-caught, cold-water fish sourced from Friend of the Sea-certified fisheries. The primary species used include sardines, anchovies, mackerel, and herring, while Arctic cod is used for cod liver oil products. Nordic Naturals offers fish oils in triglyceride and re-esterified triglyceride forms rather than ethyl ester form.
Nordic Naturals produces its fish oil at the company’s Nordic Pharma facility in Norway. There, the oil is purified through molecular distillation to remove mercury and other environmental contaminants. The facilities are NSF GMP certified, and finished products are tested for potency, purity, and freshness.
Sustainable sourcing is an important part of the company’s production approach. Nordic Naturals works with Friend of the Sea-certified fisheries and maintains traceability through its fish-oil supply and manufacturing process. Its fish oil products are also Friend of the Sea certified.
